Create redirects for changed URLs

Redirects protect customer links when pages are renamed, moved, merged, or replaced.

Identify old URLs

  1. List the old page URLs that customers or search engines may still use.
  2. Choose the best matching new destination for each old URL.
  3. Avoid redirecting every old page to the homepage unless there is no relevant replacement.

Add redirects

  1. Open redirects or domain settings.
  2. Add the old path and the new destination.
  3. Save and test each redirect in a private browser window.

Maintain redirects

  1. Review redirects after site launches or page cleanup.
  2. Remove only redirects that are no longer needed.
  3. Watch analytics for broken links or unexpected traffic drops.

Good to know

  • Redirects are part of publishing hygiene.
  • Use short, stable URLs for important pages.
